Tinnitus Awareness Week, You're Not Alone

08th, Sep 2022

The first seven days of February is Tinnitus Awareness Week and in honour of this we wanted to discuss the common misconception of this common problem.

Many of us perceive Tinnitus as a constant ringing in the ear and a severely debilitating condition, however, did you know, Tinnitus itself is not actually a condition but is the symptom of underlying conditions such as age-related hearing loss, injury to the inner ear or depression and anxiety?

Alongside a ringing in the ear, can actually consist of a wide range of varying sounds. These can include:

  • The buzzing of insects, like crickets
  • A running engine
  • Grinding metal
  • Wind or a fan
  • The hissing of a teakettle

'Tinnitus is very common and is reported in all age groups, even young children. About 30% of people will experience tinnitus at some point in their lives but the number of people who live with persistent tinnitus is approximately 13% (over 1 in 8). Tinnitus is more common in people who have hearing loss or other ear problems, but it can also be found in people with normal hearing.' - Information on Tinnitus

Whilst this may make it sound scary, there are plenty of ways you can take to to help reduce the effects.

Below is a list of simple steps that can help to relieve the symptom of tinnitus:

  • Yoga or deep breathing exercises can help to calm your mind and body and relieve the intensity of the sounds.
  • Finding ways to improve sleep like a new routine without screens and limited caffeine can reap big benefits.
  • Finding new hobbies to distract you from the noise can help take your mind off it.

However, if you continue to struggle with tinnitus despite trying home therapies, it’s important to see a professional to help identify possible causes of it.
