Mayobridge Gaelic Club has become the latest local sports club to receive a Medical Kit bag worth £250 from Kingsbridge Private Hospital in Belfast, which is part of The 3fivetwo Group. The club was nominated by local Physio, Michael Walsh, who joined club member Shane O’Hare at Kingsbridge to collect the medical supplies from Stuart Johnstone, the hospital’s Outpatient Manager.
“Proper medical equipment is expensive for any club,” Michael said. “Whilst some have access to basic First Aid Kits, many lack anything more than plasters and ice packs. When suffering a sporting injury, it’s better to treat it sooner rather than later to avoid further damage so it’s really good to know that clubs will now have the right equipment on hand. I know the club will really appreciate this donation, although we hope they won’t have to use it too often!”
The kits provided include equipment such as steri-strips, euro splints, emergency blankets, pocket masks for CPR, gloves, anti-bacterial hand gel and – of course – bandages.
Stuart Johnstone explained why Kingsbridge Private Hospital in Belfast is making these donations to local clubs and teams.
“As the official medical partners of the World Police and Fire Games 2013, we realised how important it was to have medical professionals, located pitch-side in case of injury. Whilst it isn’t always possible for clubs to have a fully-trained physio standing by, they can at least feel reassured that they have the appropriate kit on hand to help treat anything from blood injuries to sprains until they can be seen by a qualified medical professional.”
Over the next month, Kingsbridge Private Hospital in Belfast will be donating £7000 worth of medical supplies to clubs and local sports teams across Northern Ireland. Some of the clubs which medical kits have been donated to include Grosvenor RFC, Orange Grove Athletics Club, Belfast Harlequins, at Portadown Rugby Club and Randalstown RFC.
“We’re delighted to be able to make these donations to the various sports clubs, many of which are hubs of their community,” Stuart continues. “Obviously there is a level of risk with any sport, especially with contact sports like rugby, which can leave competitors with cuts, bruises or muscle strain. For anything more serious, athletes should consider our Sports Injury Clinic or Private Casualty at Kingsbridge Private Hospital.”
During the World Police and Fire Games last August, Kingsbridge supplied over 40 medical personnel and an onsite emergency triage service for both competitors and spectators of the games as well as trialling the innovative new Telemedicine program, Smart Care Doc; an internet-based doctor service, which was located in the Athletes village.
