Healthy Summer Habits

08th, Sep 2022

Our health should be our number one priority all year round, however the change of season calls for a change in routine, a revamped diet and a new exercise regimen that suits the weather.

During the summer months cultivating the right habits to help throughout the warmer weather can make a difference as the onset of warm weather can make your body more vulnerable to different kinds of diseases so it is important to follow health guidelines to ensure a healthy summer.

So How Can You Stay Healthy This Summer?

Stay Hydrated

Increasing your intake of water should be your main focus. One of the biggest dangers of being outdoors in the summer is dehydration and our body naturally loses a lot of moisture in the summer. Aim to drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water every day.

Staying hydrated can help to:

  • Regulate blood pressure and improve your heart rate,
  • Keep weight off due to it's lower calorie intake to sweetened beverages,
  • Keep your mouth clensed as water washes away cavity-causing bacteria,
  • Keep your kidneys healthy. Dehydration can lead to kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

So, try to avoid alcohol, fizzy drinks and caffeine as these can leave you dehydrated quickly, especially during hot weather. Alcohol and fizzy drinks also contain a high percentage of sugar which is bad for your skin which can add to the ill effects when your skin is already being exposed to the summer heat.

Eat Healthy and Light

Eat light, small, and frequent meals. Heavy meals with large amounts of carbohydrates and fats give rise to a lot of heat in the body. Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables that have high water content, such as oranges, watermelon, tomatoes, and berries. Intake of blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries (or any kind of berries) will help prevent damage to tissues caused by heat. They are also rich in anti-oxidants and will keep your cholesterol in control.
