Mr Shanmuganathan is a fully qualified Consultant Neurosurgeon dealing with both adult and paediatric patients for conditions relating to both brain and spine.
Mr Shanmuganathan graduated from University of Leeds in 2001, completing his Basic Surgical Training at the Yorkshire School of Surgery in 2006 and his Neurosurgical training in Edinburgh and Aberdeen in 2012.
He went on to undertake higher sub-speciality training in Paediatric Neurosurgery and Craniofacial Surgery in Great Ormond Street Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London. He is currently widening his expertise by undertaking an Orthopaedic / Neurosurgical Spinal Surgery and Pain Management sabbatical in Aberdeen.
He is based at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children as a Consultant Adult and Paediatric Neurosurgeon. He is one of two Paediatric Neurosurgeons that serve Northern Ireland. He practices privately at in the Maypole Clinic, Holywood and Kingsbridge Private Hospital, Belfast.
His interests include general Neurosurgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery, Endoscopy, Craniofacial Deformities, disorders of CSF including Chiari Malformation, Syringomyelia and complex spinal surgery. He also treats pain relating to the neck, back and pain radiating down both arms and legs.
Mr Shanmuganathan is actively involved in teaching and research at Queens University, Belfast in both the Medical School and Aerosciences Department. He has published and presented work both nationally and internationally.
