Knee pain can be debilitating and can hold you back from enjoying life. Normal day to day activities can leave you exhausted and in severe pain causing daily discomfort that can also affect your sleep at night.

At Kingsbridge Private Hospital Group we have access to some of the best orthopaedic knee surgeons in Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Why is my knee painful?

Your knee joint is made up by the lower end of your thigh bone (femur) and the upper end of your shin bone (tibia). These normally glide over each other easily because they are covered by smooth layer of cartilage. If your cartilage becomes damaged by injury or worn away by arthritis, it can make your joint painful and stiff affecting the normal movement of your knee.

Knee Replacement Surgery

If other pain relief options have been unsuccessful or depending on the severity of the damage to your knee, your Consultant at Kingsbridge Private Hospital may recommend a knee replacement. A new knee joint will help to improve your mobility and reduce pain.

Depending on the condition of your knee joint, you may need to have part, or all, of your knee joint replaced. If you have arthritis just in one area of your knee joint, usually the inside part of the joint, you may be offered a partial knee replacement (a unicondylar knee replacement). However, a total knee replacement is more common.

In a total knee replacement the artificial knee parts usually consist of curved metal (on the femoral side) and a metal platform (on the tibial side) with a polyethylene insert or spacer in between. A knee replacement can last for up to 20 years.

Alternatives to Knee Replacement Surgery

Your Orthopaedic Consultant at Kingsbridge Private Hospital Group will usually only recommend that you have surgery if non-surgical treatments, such as physiotherapy and exercise, medicines, pain clinic injections or using physical aids like a walking stick, no longer help to reduce your pain or improve your mobility.

Alternative surgical procedures include:

  • Arthroscopy (if the arthritis isn't too sever)
  • Osteotomy (where your leg bones are cut and re-set to reduce the wear if damage is mostly on one particular side)

Your consultant will explain all options that are available to you at your appointment.
