Clare Rowan was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Musgrave Park Hospital in 2018.
She graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2006 and completed her Core and Higher Surgical Training in Northern Ireland. She subsequently spent a year in Nottingham as a TIG (Transitional Interface Group) Fellow in Hand Surgery. These Advanced Training Posts in Hand Surgery are competitively appointed and regarded as the pinnacle of hand surgery training in the UK.
She maintains an interest in research and has published and presented locally, nationally and internationally. She was awarded 1st prize at the Irish Hand Society Free Paper Presentations in May 2014 for her work on hemi-hamate autograft. She also was awarded 1st prize at the Northern Ireland Orthopaedic Registrars’ Prize Day in 2015 for her work on bone banking. She subsequently presented her work at the Best of the Best Trainee Presentations at the British Orthopaedic Association Meeting in Liverpool, September 2015. She was a member of the BSSH Scaphoid Non-Union Group, and this research has been both published and presented. She held the position of Orthopaedic Specialty Editor at Surgery (Journal- Oxford) from 2020-21 and has continued to author and supervise publications in her consultant career. She is actively involved in teaching medical students and training orthopaedic trainees and is a recognised trainer.
Her NHS practice encompasses all aspects of hand and wrist surgery, both elective and trauma. She has a particular interest in day case surgery and service improvement and was the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon responsible for setting up the day case regional anaesthesia ambulatory trauma list in the Royal Victoria Hospital in 2018.

Clare is very proud to combine her career and passion for surgery with being a mother to a young daughter. She enjoys reading, contemporary British and Irish Art and is a keen skier (water and alpine).
